According to NCC's News, Dr. Ali Soltanpour, manager of hydrography and tidal affairs, announced: "The Comparison of the water level of Hur al-Azim wetland in June 2021 with the same time last year (June 2020) using satellite data shows that the water level has decreased by 50 cm”.

These studies indicate that after a significant increase in the level of the wetland in 2019 as a result of incoming floods during 2020 and 2021, the level of this wetland has been decreasing due to rainfall reduction.

Dr. Soltanpour said: “At the end of 2018, this wetland was destroyed due to lack of water inflow so that its southern part got completely dry and only its northern part remained, which had an effective role in intensifying dust storms in Khuzestan region.

In previous years, because of environmental issues, the southern basins of the wetland, numbers three, four, and five, were flooded in the Iranian part, but the continuation of the drying process of the wetland was evident in the Iraqi part.

 The rains of April 2019 caused the wetland to be completely flooded in both the Iranian and Iraqi parts so that the wetland was faced with a significant increase in water volume.

Satellite observations in spring 2019, showed that the level of this water area has increased by more than 2.5 meters due to incoming floods and as a result, the volume of water has increased by four billion cubic meters compared to 2018.

However, with the decrease of rainfall in the following years, the level of the wetland decreased, so that according to satellite data, the level of the wetland in June 2020 and 2021 compared to the previous year has decreased by one and a half meters.

In the end, Soltanpour pointed out: Hur al-Azim is one of the largest wetlands in Iran and is located in the west of Khuzestan province and the border of Iran and Iraq so that about one-third of this wetland is in Iran and two-thirds of it is in Iraq. This wetland has very rich animal and plant resources and plays an effective role in regulating the climate of the region.
