Subsequent to choosing the Director General of NCC as the representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran in APDIM:

Presence of Director General of NCC as Official Representative of Islamic Republic of Iran in APDIM’s Seventh Meeting of Governing Council in Turkey

After the election of the Director General of NCC as the representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the Governing Council of the Asian and Pacific Centre for the Development of Disaster Information Management (APDIM), Ali Javidaneh as the official representative of the country participated in the APDIM’s Seventh Meeting of the Governing Council in Istanbul, Turkey and presented the official report of the country.

According to the International Relations Office of NCC, After the election of the Director General of National Cartographic Center of Iran as the representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the Governing Council of the Asian and Pacific Centre for the Development of Disaster Information Management (APDIM), Ali Javidaneh, the Director General of NCC, as the official representative of the country participated in the APDIM’s Seventh Meeting of the Governing Council in Istanbul, Turkey and presented the official report of the country.
 
the Director General of National Cartographic Center of Iran as the representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran attended the APDIM’s Seventh Meeting of the Governing Council and while thanking the host country, Turkey, ESCAP members and the president of APDIM, pointed out all the efforts made in the previous year and said: “The coincidence of the Coronavirus epidemic, which hopefully is decreasing, with climate change and the phenomenon of dust and natural hazards, once again warn us about the common vulnerabilities of the Asia-Pacific region and the urgency of measures that should be taken in case of the disasters. These issues repeatedly remind us of the transboundary nature of natural disaster risks, which have no passport and respect no borders. No country is immune and no area is safe”.
 
Ali Javidaneh continued his speech and stated: “Considering that National Cartographic Center of Iran is a policy-making and governing body in the field of maps and spatial information and related infrastructures and systems at the national level, and among the executive bodies of the country is the leader in this field and also as regards many elements and components of natural disasters and hazards are dependent on spatial information and related to parts of the missions of this organization, the Islamic Republic of Iran decided to choose the National Cartographic Center of Iran which is involved in location information as the representative of the country in the APDIM’s Governing Council”.


Referring to the NCC’s 70-year experience in Geomatics, the Director General of NCC offered suggestions including the creation of a regional spatial data infrastructure (R-SDI), the use of GIS for managing disaster risk reduction, the approval of a law to limit countries in building structures such as dams that aggravate the dust phenomenon, the implementation of joint regional projects regarding geodynamic issues and the improvement of flood forecasting models.
 
The deputy of Plan and Budget Organization of the Islamic Republic of Iran at the Meeting of the Governing Council, emphasized the brilliant performance of National Cartographic Center of Iran in the international field and referred to to the selection of NCC as the head of the integration of spatial data and statistics working group of the United Nations Global Geospatial Information Management for Asia and the Pacific (UN-GGIM-AP) and stated: “The government of the Islamic Republic of Iran is committed to providing maximum political, legal and financial support to APDIM and will continue to adhere to all its commitments”.
 
At the end of the meeting, Ms. Rossano, the director of APDIM, thanked Dr. Ali Javidaneh, the representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran, for his valuable words and Iran's full support for this center.

It is worth mentioning that the delegation of the Islamic Republic of Iran headed by NCC was sent to Turkey to participate in the High-Level Expert Consultation Meeting on Risk Data Monitoring and Disaster Information Management, as well as the APDIM’s Seventh Meeting of the Governing Council and during two consecutive days attended the specialized meetings and presented speeches and national reports.
 
the Asian and Pacific Centre for the Development of Disaster Information Management (APDIM) is a regional institution of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) which aims to combat and manage natural disasters at a specialized level. In order to manage the natural disasters, this center tries to reduce the risk of natural disasters through regional cooperation between countries.
 


About the Governing Council of APDIM

 
APDIM is governed by a Governing Council that is responsible for reviewing the institutes’ administration and financial status, implementation of the program of work and advising the institute directors on the formulation of the program of work. The Council consists of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the host country of the center, and eight ESCAP member countries elected for a period of three years. The Governing Council meets at least once a year, to review the administrative and financial status of the Centre and advice on the formulation and implementation of its program of work. A report of the Governing Council session is submitted to the ESCAP annual session. Members of APDIM Governing Council for the 2019 – 2021 period are Bangladesh; Cambodia; Fiji; India; Islamic Republic of Iran; Macao, China; Mongolia; Pakistan; and Turkey.
By issuing a resolution at the APDIM’s Second Meeting of the Governing Council in February 2018, the Asian and Pacific Centre for the Development of Disaster Information Management officially started to work in the field of disaster information management under the technical and administrative standards of the United Nations. The fifth session of the Governing Council of APDIM was held online on 26 January 2021, hosted by the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Council addressed the programmatic and technical activities and the administrative and financial issues of the Centre. The sixth The sixth session of the Governing Council of APDIM was also held online on 8 February 2022 and this council approved the report of the center's activities after its fifth meeting and expressed satisfaction with the progress made in the implementation of its program of work.
