National Cartographic Center of Iran Protests United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names to Forging Persian Gulf Name

Objection to the use of a fake name for the Persian Gulf in Bulletin No. 66 of the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names

According to NCC News, quoted from the Secretariat of the Specialized Committee for Nomenclature and Unification of Geographical Names of Iran, in protest against the use of the fake term instead of “Persian Gulf” in Bulletin No. 66 of the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names, the secretariat has requested a correction to the bulletin in correspondence with this international body.

Following Iran's objection, the secretariat sent a note to the National Survey Authority of the Sultanate of Oman to comply with the UN editorial guideline regarding the use of the term "Persian Gulf" and its correction in Bulletin No. 66; the correspondence mentioned that the authenticity and accuracy of the historical name "Persian Gulf" is clear and the approach and actions of the United Nations leave no doubt that the correct and complete name "Persian Gulf" is the standard geographical term for the waters between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula.

The Specialized Committee for Nomenclature and Unification of Geographical Names of Iran, located in the National Cartographic Center of Iran, officially declared its objection and demanded the correction of the existing version on the UNGEGN website and the amendment of procedures to prevent the spread of improper names in this bulletin. This bulletin is like a showcase that publishes the major activities of countries in various fields related to geographic names. Most of experts in spatial sciences are involved in preparing this publication, so it is expected that geographic names are used correctly in the reports and articles of this publication. Unfortunately, in the recently published report on page 58 of issue 66, which is related to Oman, the improper name was used instead of the correct and historical name, Persian Gulf.

It is worth mentioning that the National Cartographic Center of Iran has requested the secretariat of the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN) to send a copy of its note to the National Survey Authority of the Sultanate of Oman for the National Cartographic Center of Iran.

The UNGEGN Secretariat, while thanking the note from the National Cartographic Center of Iran on this matter, expressed: “We welcome the contributions of the National Cartographic Center of Iran in future bulletin issues. Bulletin No. 67 is scheduled for May 2024 and will focus on Good Practices resulting from Relationships between National Mapping Agencies/ Spatial Data and Geographical Names”.
